Happy New Year and a New School for 2006!Happy New Year, Everyone! We have spent the holiday vacation working hard to move to our new facility and to prepare it for a great new semester and year. When students across the county return to school on January 9, 2006, students of Toussaint L'Ouverture High School for Arts & Social Justice will be starting classes in a freshly renovated facility at Delray Square: 14610 South Military Trail, Delray Beach, Florida. We are in the Northeast corner of the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Military Trail--next to the Jewish Community Center in the same plaza that houses Publix, the Delray Square movie theater, and the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It's easy to find: from our previous location: just travel west on Atlantic Avenue. Just before before reaching Military Trail, turn right onto Whatley Avenue (between IHOP and Publix) and proceed around to your right, following the hedge on the right to the furthermost corner of the plaza. Look for our signs. And be ready for a modern, academically enriching learning environment!
Although our phone service will still ring, temporarily, into our previous location, we will be reachable at both sites on our regular school numbers (land lines and cell phones): Dr. Allerdyce: (561) 414-5464 Major Bernadel (561) 414-5465 Ms. Lauren Keller (561) 667-9479 Ms. Mandy Freedman: (561) 376-1089 Much apprecation: Many people have helped us in the giant task of moving and preparing the new site. Special thanks to the student workers, the parents, and to TLHS staff who have volunteered their vacation time to help tremendously. The students who helped will be recognized on morning announcements and listed here soon. The teachers who deserve much recognition for going above and beyond the call of duty are Mr. Gene Martel, Mr. Reiner Poppe, Ms. Anita Kessler (and husband Larry Kessler), Ms. Denise Green, and Mr. Mike Dudeck. Mr. Martel and Mr. Poppe, especially, have made the move-in process flow. And a big THANK YOU goes to parents Kay and Tim Emrick and Chris Ramos, who have donated countless hours of skilled labor to renovate, paint and otherwise prepare the new site. Kay, Tim, and Chris--without you, TLHS would not have come this far! You will always be part of our school community in a special way. So will many other very special people, some with us presently, and some in spirit. On December 22, 2005, TLHS student Viviana "Daisy" Sanchez passed away at her Boynton Beach home at the age of 18. With her death coming on the last day of the semester, many students who knew this courageous, talented, and beautiful young woman have not yet had a chance to honor her memory formally. One of our first assemblies at our new facility will give them a chance to do just that, when we hold a gathering in Viviana's honor. Her social worker as well as school counselors will be on hand to help students process their feelings. Viviana will always be remembered, and we are dedicating a room to her memory in the new school--it will be known the "Daisy Room." In addition, Viviana's poem "Like Glue" was chosen as a runner-up in the Palm Beach Poetry Festival to be held at Old School Square January 20-22, 2006, and it will be read in her honor. Toussaint L'Ouverture High School for Arts and Social Justice extends our sympathies and best wishes to Viviana's family. |
