TOUSSAINT L’OUVERTURE HIGH SCHOOL FOR ARTS & SOCIAL JUSTICE INVITES PUBLIC TO CELEBRATION OF HAITIAN FLAG DAY FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2007

DELRAY BEACH, FL – Toussaint L’Ouverture High School for Arts & Social Justice (TLHS) invites the public to attend its celebration of Haitian Flag Day on Friday, May 18, 2007. The festivities will take place from 3 PM until 8 PM at the school, located at the at the northeast corner of the Delray Square Plaza, 14610 Military Trail, Delray Beach, Florida 33484.

The festivities will feature guest speakers from the community as well as federal, state, and local elected officials. The celebration will also include a dramatic reenactment of Louis Laroche’s famous poem about Toussaint L’Ouverture, Caribbean music, food and art; a book fair; award presentations; a student poetry reading; and art auction. The photographic exhibition, Haitians of Florida: The Hope and the Future (Executive Producer: Joseph Bernadel) will also be on display at the school.

The event is part of Haitian Heritage Month and highlights the historical significance of Haiti’s liberation in 1804 and its status as the first Black Republic in the Western Hemisphere.

Toussaint L’Ouverture High School for Arts & Social Justice is an innovative charter high school; serving 100+ students in grades 9-12. Admission is open to all age-appropriate students in Palm Beach County. Our students come from diverse socio-economic groups and represent the demographics of our community. We are a tuition-free, publicly funded institution, and the epitome of the “anti-gang” model of community-based education.

TLHS’s mission is to provide motivated students of diverse ability levels a unique experience using art as a vehicle for social justice and individual change. The school’s vision is to help youth acquire the skills they need to be successful in college and/or work and to have a voice in co-creating a world they can believe in.
