TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The head of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) of Indonesia, Taruna Ikrar, said on Tuesday, August 27, the government brought in monkeypox or mpox vaccines in three stages. The Ministry of Health currently holds 7,600 doses of mpox vaccines.
Taruna explained one of the vaccines brought in was the Jynneos vaccine useful for prevention and treatment. The vaccine was imported in three stages due to its limited production.
Taruna said the Ministry of Health will explain regarding the vaccine’s exporters. "Our duty is to conduct what we call an ‘emergency use authorization’ or imported vaccine,” Taruna said.
The mpox cases in Indonesia, especially Jakarta, continue to be a public concern despite World Health Organization (WHO) rescinding the pandemic status on May 3, 2023.
Head of the Jakarta Health Office, Ani Ruspitawati said on Monday that the Jakarta government has carried out a prevent and block system to handle mpox. The government disseminated information about the preventive measures and transmission of mpox and reported suspects to hospitals or public health facilities.
The government also ran a control case study that identified mpox vulnerable groups. The study found men aged 20-40 who work outdoors, identify as hom*osexual or bisexual, and HIV or STI patients are vulnerable to monkeypox.
According to Ani, the vaccination program in 2023 has reached 495 people of the key population. “With 430 people receiving their second dose,” Ani said.
The clinical features of mpox patients back in 2022 and 2023 are fever, headache, muscle pain, back pain, and body fatigue accompanied by rashes or lesions in the form of white small bubbles with a dark middle part.
“Hopefully, the mpox cases in Jakarta could be minimized as we continue to take these steps,” Ani said.
